1. Mechanical Overview & Constraints

The Jonsbo N1 represents one of the most volume-efficient 5-drive (4x 3.5” + 1x 2.5”) enclosures available for self-hosted homelabs. However, its 13.8-liter envelope introduces severe thermal and cabling constraints when operated 24/7 in residential environments.

Standard industrial Flex-ATX power supplies typically run high-RPM 40x20mm blowers (ADDA AD0412UB-C73GP) that generate between 42 dBA and 51 dBA under modest load—far exceeding acceptable office noise floors.

By deploying the Enhance ENP-7660B equipped with a calibrated Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX fan mod and paired with custom 150mm silicone harnesses, total system noise is suppressed to under 22 dBA at 1 meter, while idle power draw registers at a clean 14.2W with four 5400 RPM enterprise drives spun down.

2. Clearance & Tolerances Matrix

Precision clearances were measured using Mitutoyo 500-196-30 digital calipers with a certified baseline error margin of ±0.02 mm:

  • CPU Cooler Clearance: Maximum allowable ceiling is 45.0 mm. The recommended Noctua NH-L9i-17xx measures 37.0 mm, providing +8.0 mm of buffer space which prevents fan turbulence against the inner drive bay shelf.
  • PSU Cavity: The Flex-ATX mounting tray accepts standard 150.0 mm units. Rigid standard factory cables cannot bend tightly enough to clear the bottom drive tray. The 150 mm custom ultra-flexible silver-plated copper harness with silicone insulation is mandatory to avoid stressing the backplane PCB.
  • SATA Backplane Airflow: To prevent thermal drift into Drive Bay 4, always affix the CAD-N1-EXH 3D-printed baffle to redirect power supply exhaust upward and out through the chassis side perforations.

3. Power Consumption & Acoustics Benchmarks

Measurements conducted on TrueNAS SCALE 24.10 running an Intel Core i3-12100 with 32GB ECC DDR4 memory:

  • TrueNAS Idle (Disks in Standby): 14.2 Watts // 19.4 dBA @ 1m
  • ZFS Scrub Peak (4x IronWolf 8TB Active): 46.8 Watts // 23.6 dBA @ 1m
  • Thermal Saturation (2 Hours 100% CPU Load): Max PSU internal temperature 42.1°C with ambient room temperature calibrated to 21.4°C.
